WASHINGTON -- Dairy herds in Michigan produced 867 million pounds of milk during August, up 4.1 percent from a year ago, according to the USDA, NASS, Great Lakes Regional Office. The daily rate per cow was 68.4 pounds, up 0.2 pounds from August 2014. The dairy herd was estimated at 409,000 head for August, up 15,000 head from a year earlier.

Dairy herds in Indiana produced 333 million pounds of milk during August, up 1.5 percent from a year ago, according to Greg Matli, State Statistician of the USDA, NASS, Indiana Field Office. The daily rate per cow was 59.4 pounds, up 0.4 pound from August 2014. The dairy herd was estimated at 181,000 head for August, up 2,000 head from a year earlier.

Dairy herds in Ohio produced 466 million pounds of milk during August, up 1.7 percent from a year ago, according to Cheryl Turner, State Statistician of the USDA, NASS, Ohio Field Office. The daily rate per cow was 56.5 pounds, up 1.0 pound from August 2014. The dairy herd was estimated at 266,000 head for August, unchanged from a year earlier.

Milk production in the 23 major States during August totaled 16.3 billion pounds, up 0.8 percent from August 2014. The daily production per cow in the 23 major States averaged 61 pounds in August, 0.2 pounds above August 2014. The number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major States was 8.63 million head, 43,000 head more than August 2014, but unchanged from July 2015.
