WASHINGTON -- Dairy herds in Michigan produced 840 million pounds of milk during April, up 6.5 percent from a year ago, according to the USDA, NASS, Great Lakes Regional Office. The daily rate per cow was 69.5 pounds, up 0.8 pound from April 2014. The dairy herd was estimated at 403,000 head for April, up 20,000 head from a year earlier.

Milk production in the 23 major States during April totaled 16.6 billion pounds, up 1.7 percent from April 2014. The daily production per cow in the 23 major States averaged 64.3 pounds in April, 0.6 pound above April 2014. The number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major States was 8.62 million head, 77,000 head more than April 2014, and 2,000 head more than March 2015.

Dairy herds in Indiana produced 336 million pounds of milk during April, up 3.4 percent from a year ago, according to Greg Matli, State Statistician of the USDA, NASS, Indiana Field Office. The daily rate per cow was 61.8 pounds, up 0.3 pound from April 2014. The dairy herd was estimated at 181,000 head for April, up 5,000 head from a year earlier.

Dairy herds in Ohio produced 464 million pounds of milk during April, up 1.1 percent from a year ago, according to Cheryl Turner, State Statistician of the USDA, NASS, Ohio Field Office. The daily rate per cow was 57.7 pounds, up 0.4 pound from April 2014. The dairy herd was estimated at 268,000 head for April, up 1,000 head from a year earlier.
