WASHINGTON -- Dairy herds in Michigan produced 887 million pounds of milk during May, up 7.6 percent from a year ago, according to the USDA, NASS, Great Lakes Regional Office. The daily rate per cow was 70.5 pounds, up 1.3 pounds from May 2014. The dairy herd was estimated at 406,000 head for May, up 22,000 head from a year earlier.

Dairy herds in Indiana produced 350 million pounds of milk during May, up 2.3 percent from a year ago, according to Greg Matli, State Statistician of the USDA, NASS, Indiana Field Office. The daily rate per cow was 62.4 pounds, unchanged from May 2014. The dairy herd was estimated at 181,000 head for May, up 4,000 head from a year earlier.

Dairy herds in Ohio produced 485 million pounds of milk during May, up 1.3 percent from a year ago, according to Cheryl Turner, State Statistician of the USDA, NASS, Ohio Field Office. The daily rate per cow was 58.4 pounds, up 0.3 pound from May 2014. The dairy herd was estimated at 268,000 head for May, up 2,000 head from a year earlier.

Milk production in the 23 major States during May totaled 17.2 billion pounds, up 1.4 percent from May 2014. The daily production per cow in the 23 major States averaged 64.2 pounds in May, 0.4 pound above May 2014. The number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major States was 8.63 million head, 72,000 head more than May 2014, and 4,000 head more than April 2015.
