LEXINGTON, MI -- Fifty-six youth and fourteen adult chaperones from Huron, St. Clair, Sanilac and Tuscola Counties attended Thumb Area 4-H Camp held at Camp Cavell in Lexington, July 6-8, 2016. The main purpose was to get young 4-H’ers and non-4-H’ers, 9 to 14 years of age, involved in an outdoor-living experience.
A team of twenty-five (25) awesome 4-H teen camp counselors and six (6) adults are responsible for the planning, implementation and evaluation of the Thumb Area 4-H Camp program. Throughout the year, committee members are involved in numerous workshops and trainings in preparation for Thumb Area 4-H Camp.
Thumb Area 4-H Camp offers a golden opportunity to 4-H’ers and non-4-H’ers to make new friends and share experiences in camping, all while building and developing life skills. Camp featured arts and crafts, singing, outdoor games, campfires and s’mores. “Star Wars” was this year’s theme for Thumb Area 4-H Camp.
Activity sessions included outdoor skills, shooting sports, mud hiking, kayaking, swimming in Lake Huron, STEM and team building events. Campers made Star Wars string art, glass bottle nebulas, floam, slime, bubble mixes and other various crafts. At Jedi training, campers each made their own light saber, learned how to use the force, and then put those skills to the test in Jedi battles. At the outdoor skills station, campers did a combination of successfully putting up a tent, made fire starters, made solar ovens, and even made their own butter. Youth participated in Cantina Night where the kids played numerous games such as water balloons, fortune telling, mask making, karaoke and so much more.
The campers also participated in the Honey Bee Challenge presented through the Michigan Ag Innovator’s program. It taught the campers how important honey bees and other pollinators are to our everyday life and broadened their views of agriculture as a whole. The campers made robo-bees and created a course to guide them through. In the end, they got to keep their bees.
