STURGIS, MI -- International relations are a common occurrence in today’s business world as partnerships are formed, supplies are provided and products are purchased. One company found a way to share their ties to the world with the community they work in.

Burr Oak Tool of Sturgis, MI hosts a week long event where people from the industry around the world meet for networking, sharing ideas, education, and gaining current information. They also sponsor the ‘Taste of the World’ festival where the community is invited to meet the international representatives and experience some of their culture, primarily in the food department.

Ten countries were present for the culinary event with each providing a sample of a special dish that is popular in their respective lands. Each was also encouraged to share trinkets, information about their nation, and interact with the community members who attended. As people walked around the grounds, music from the various nations was heard over a speaker.

Brazil presented a dessert dish called Arroz Doce Deliciosa Super Cremoso which translated was delicious super creamy sweet rice. Our northerly neighbor provided another dessert made of their favorite export called Maple Butter Tarts. The tart shells were filled with maple syrup and raisins. China was there with Tremella Jujube Soup, a white fungus and red date sugar soup.

Potato Pancakes made an appearance at the Czech Republic booth under the name of Bramborak. A similar side dish was shared at the India stand in the form of spinach patties made with mixed vegetables. It was called Hara Bhara Kabob and was served with a green chutney. Lasagne with meat sauce, a popular dish in the United States, was created at the Italy tent and was referred to as Lasagne Alla Bolognese.

Teriyaki Chicken was the taste of choice for Japan which was grilled chicken marinated in a soy-based sauce. Our neighbor to the south presented a colorful booth with Tacos Dorados on their menu. It was a fried chicken taco with sour cream, red salsa, and lettuce. South Korea offered Bulgogi, barbequed beef strips. A spicy chicken coconut soup was the taste sensation at the Thailand and it was named Tom Kha Kai.

The participants received a ‘passport’ when they arrived with spaces for the representatives to ‘stamp’ as they sampled the culinary offerings. The idea of the event was to introduce the community to those who work with Burr Oak Tool from around the world and give them a ‘taste’ of the various nations. The opportunity to meet people from foreign countries as well as experience the food was appreciated by many as a family activity for the evening.
