WASHINGTON -- Dairy herds in Michigan produced 948 million pounds of milk during June, up 2.8 percent from a year ago, according to Marlo Johnson, Regional Director of USDA, NASS, Great Lakes Regional Office. 

The daily rate per cow was 74.0 pounds, up 0.7 pounds from June 2016. The dairy herd was estimated at 427,000 head for June, up 8,000 head from a year earlier. 

Dairy herds in Indiana produced 346 million pounds of milk during June, up 2.7 percent from a year ago, according to Greg Matli, State Statistician of the USDA, NASS, Indiana Field Office. The daily rate per cow was 62.0 pounds, up 1.0 pound from June 2016. 

The dairy herd was estimated at 186,000 head for June, up 2,000 head from a year earlier. 

Dairy herds in Ohio produced 468 million pounds of milk during June, up 0.4 percent from a year ago, according to Cheryl Turner, State Statistician of the USDA, NASS, Ohio Field Office. The daily rate per cow was 59.5 pounds, up 1.2 pounds from June 2016. The dairy herd was estimated at 262,000 head for June, down 4,000 head from a year earlier. 

Milk production in the 23 major States during June totaled 16.9 billion pounds, up 1.7 percent from June 2016. The daily production per cow in the 23 major States averaged 64.6 pounds for June, 0.4 pounds above June 2016. 

The number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major States was 8.73 million head, 83,000 head more than June 2016, and 4,000 head more than May 2017.
