FRANKENMUTH, MI – The Frankenmuth Farmers Market is excited to announce its 2018 dates and calendar of events.  This is the Market’s 14th season and the second full year with a new home and permanent building.  The events are designed to support the Market’s mission of providing and promoting the values of local food and products in an effort to strengthen and preserve our economy, agriculture, and sustainability.  Additional events and classes will continue to be announced in the future.   Both the Gathering Barn and the Artisans Kitchen, which are frequently rented by individuals for parties, receptions and other affairs, may still be able to be rented on event dates.  Those interested are encouraged to call the Market for further information or to learn more and sign up for events.  For continued updates, individuals may subscribe to the Market’s email newsletter by emailing frankenmuthfarmersmarket@gmail.com.  

Before the outdoor season begins, the Market will celebrate its first annual National Pie Day Fundraiser January 23 9am-7pm with freshly baked pies on sale in the Gathering Barn.  On February 25 from 8am to 1pm, “Brunchfast at the Market” will offer a special breakfast “done up right in the Gathering Barn.” On March 8, the Market will offer Dinner Donuts for tasting at Rotary’s Great Taste of Frankenmuth held at Zehnder’s and Bavarian Inn 5-8pm.  On May 17 and 18, the Market will transform into Sale Fest Central hosting individuals with small yard sale offerings as part of Frankenmuth’s city-wide garage sale event.  The Market’s season will begin its 8am-2pm Saturday outdoor farmers markets May 19 running weekly through October 13.  Wednesday outdoor farmers markets will run 3-6pm June 27 through August 29.  June 27 is also Kids Day and the beginning of the Power of Produce program, where registered children receive free tokens each week to be redeemed for fruits or vegetables.  June 9 will be German Day at the Market in conjunction with Frankenmuth’s Bavarian Festival.  The Market will participate in the Bavarian Parade on June 10, celebrating 60 years of the Bavarian Festival.  July 14 will be the Market’s 14th birthday celebration with free cake and ice cream.  August 11 will be a Pig Roast fundraising luncheon at the Market.  The Market will again offer Fun at the Car Hop on September 6 as cars stroll Main Street in anticipation of Frankenmuth Auto Fest.  The Market’s annual Feast of the Harvest Moon Fundraiser will take place September 25.  The Market’s annual two-weekend Christkindlmarkt will run November 23 through 25 and November 30 through December 1.  The 3rd annual children’s event Night at the North Pole will occur December 14.  

The Market will continue hosting its avant-garde Edible Experience Club dinners, open only to annual members of the club.  2018 dining experiences include ilLOGICAL on March 20, Ice Cream for Dinner on July 10, and Mathematique 1.0 on November 6.  

The Market will also host two sets of classes, with more classes and formats yet to be added.  One series of classes will focus on nutrition with dietitians Amanda Leddy and Rachel Trumble.  These classes cost $10 and begin at 6pm.  On February 5, Eating For a Healthy Heart will focus on how to keep your heart healthy with education on portion size, low sodium food options, low fat vs fat free options, and exercise. Heart healthy recipes and tastings will be available.  On February 21, Self-Love: Body Positive will focus on positive self-talk and education on vitamins, keeping the body healthy no matter your size, setting goals, and exercise.  Healthy tasting to be provided.  On March 5, Go Further With Food will focus on the importance of making informed food choices, mindful eating and building healthy relationships with food along with physical activity habits.  

On March 21, Even Further With Food will focus on mindful eating when dining out and at get-togethers, and understanding the new food label and what to look for in the grocery stores.  On April 2, Spring Into Health will introduce the macronutrients and the importance of them for our body.  On April 18, Spring Into Health II will offer tips for successful meal planning, food preparation and grocery shopping with focusing on the macronutrients.  

On May 7, Cooking With Kids: Top Chef will introduce MyPlate with the focus on food group and portion sizes. Children will have the opportunity to compete in making their own healthy recipes.  (Space is limited: 15 kids ages 8-10 years.)  

On May 23, Cooking With Pre-Teens will discuss the importance of staying active and fueling the body properly as a teen. Students will the opportunity to compete in making their own healthy and fueling recipe.

Another class series features food safety with MSU Extension, running 1-3pm and costing $10 per class.  On June 6, Jams and Jellies will cover proper preparation methods.  July 25 will discuss Dehydrating safety.  August 15 will feature Canning Basics.  October 24 will discuss Preserving Food for Gifts, running 6-8pm.
