Tri-state milk numbers for March released
WASHINGTON – Dairy herds in Michigan produced 924 million pounds of milk during March, up 7.7 percent from a year ago, according to Marlo Johnson, Regional Director of USDA, NASS, Great Lakes Regional Office. The daily rate per cow was 71.6 pounds, up 2.9 pounds from March 2015. The dairy herd was estimated at 416,000 head for March, up 13,000 head from a year earlier.
Dairy herds in Indiana produced 358 million pounds of milk during March, up 4.4 percent from a year ago, according to Greg Matli, State Statistician of the USDA, NASS, Indiana Field Office. The daily rate per cow was 62.7 pounds, up 1.6 pounds from March 2015. The dairy herd was estimated at 184,000 head for March, up 3,000 head from a year earlier.
Dairy herds in Ohio produced 471 million pounds of milk during March, up 0.6 percent from a year ago, according to Cheryl Turner, State Statistician of the USDA, NASS, Ohio Field Office. The daily rate per cow was 57.1 pounds, up 0.8 pounds from March 2015. The dairy herd was estimated at 266,000 head for March, down 2,000 from a year earlier.
Milk production in the 23 major States during March totaled 17.2 billion pounds, up 1.8 percent from March 2015. The daily production per cow in the 23 major States averaged 64.3 pounds in March, 1.0 pound above March 2015. The number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major States was 8.64 million head, 19,000 head more than March 2015, and 9,000 head less than February 2016.
