Wells hosts customer appreciation day

LITCHFIELD, MI — In 1952, Doty and Wells opened for business in Litchfield, MI offering I.H.C. products including refrigerators and home freezers. Within six months, Clifton and Frances Wells had purchased the entire business which continues today under their son Steve and daughter-in-law Karen Wells. Wells Equipment Sales Inc sells and services trucks, tractors, and farm and lawn equipment. Wells has used tractors, combines, and implements for sale, too.

On February 22, 2017, Wells Equipment celebrated 65 years of serving the public with their annual Customer Appreciation Day. The event featured a seminar on the latest innovations from Kinze Manufacturing, a catered lunch, door prizes, and an opportunity to test drive tractors at the dealership.

The celebration began on the Monday before as Wells Equipment offered weeklong discounts on parts for tractors, implements, and equipment. The brands sold there include Case IH, International, New Holland, Landoll, Brillion, Sunflower, Pottinger, Unverferth, Brent, Bush Hog, Cub Cadet, Simplicity, Yanmar, and Kinze.

On Wednesday, the seminar was presented by Jim McGee of Kinze with the focus on their row crop planters. The company began in 1965 in Ladora, IA as Kinze Welding. The founder, Jon Kizenbaw, found there was a need for improvements for planting practices. Through the years, the company has developed planters that range from 4 – 36 rows. In addition, they have improved on their grain cart designs, now offering single auger units in 1050 and 850 bushel capacities.

“We are making continuous changes and updates,” McGee said. “I encourage everyone to make a trip to the factory in Williamsburg, IA and take a tour.” The company purchased baggage trams from an airport, added seats, and created carts for tours through the facility, allowing for most anyone to appreciate viewing the creation of the implements.

McGee shared a humorous yet intensive talk on the newest improvements on the planters and how these changes will affect the farmer. He focused on the impact to the seed depth, seed spacing, and the seed-to-soil contact. McGee then expounded on each of the points, sharing a screen presentation to enhance the talk. Each attendee received a planter checklist to assist in the maintenance of their equipment.

The meal consisted of ham slices, potatoes, green beans, dinner roll, and a piece of cake. When the lunch was wrapping up, Steve Wells introduced the staff who was helping with the event, sales representatives present, Mary Houchen of Murfy’s Catering in Jonesville, and a special note to his wife Karen for all her work.

“Many of the staff have been with us for many years and we could not do it without them.  It takes a great staff with great customers along with great products to make it all work,” Wells said.

The special daylong celebration concluded with many of the attendees receiving door prizes from the numerous companies represented through the years.
