Michigan Sheep Producers Association news release

The Michigan Sheep Producers Association (MSPA) is holding its annual Shepherds Weekend at the Crowne Plaza in Lansing, Michigan January 5-7, 2018.

The weekend’s events kick off Friday evening with a program with young sheep producers.  Presentations will be given by Young Producers (ages 18-35) and the other 4H/FFA (ages 14-17).  Each competition will be judged and a winner for each division.  The winner of the Young Producers group will receive a trip to the American Sheep Industry convention January 31 – February 3 in San Antonio, Texas.  Email Heather Ludlam, drhludlam@gmail.com for competition rules and to registration.  If time allows, there will be a panel discussion involving Michigan young sheep producers.

Registration opens at 7:30 am on Saturday.  The opening session is at 8:45 am, followed by presentations from Dr. Richard Ehrhardt, Small Ruminant Specialist, MSU and Susan Schoenian, Sheep & Goat Specialist at the University of Maryland’s Western Maryland Research & Education Center.

Saturday afternoon breakout sessions are designed to cover a variety of sheep related issues.  Evening activities include an auction and banquet.  Along with the educational seminars, you will find a trade show representing all areas of the sheep industry.

Running simultaneously with the adult programs on Saturday are youth educational sessions and fun activities.  In the afternoon the youth will tour MSU Sheep Teaching and Research Facility.  Saturday evening wraps up with a pizza/sub and pool party.  Sunday is the youth Junior Quiz Bowl contest and the Master Shepherd Competition.

Sunday’s adult program opens at 9 am with our featured speaker, Susan Schoenian.  Followed by the MSPA annual meeting and updates regarding the sheep industry.  Dr. Richard Ehrhardt will conclude the weekend program at 1 pm.
