The North Central Region Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (NCR-SARE) Program is pleased to announce the projects recommended for funding for the 2018 Farmer Rancher Grant Program. 
Forty-two grant projects were selected to receive a total of more than $515,000 through this NCR-SARE grant program, which offers competitive grants for farmers and ranchers who are exploring sustainable agriculture in America’s Midwest.
 The Farmer Rancher Grant Program is a competitive grants program for farmers and ranchers who want to explore sustainable solutions to problems through on-farm research, demonstration, and education projects. 
Those selected to receive funding in the tri-state area included (in order by state): 
• Richard Barnes of Tanglewood Berry Farm in Fort Wayne, IN was awarded $22,474 for the project, “Improving Worker Welfare and Grower Profitability in Small-scale Strawberry Production.”
• Liz Brownlee of Nightfall Farm in Crothersville, IN was awarded $15,000 for the project, “Planning for a Farmer-to-Farmer Butcher Shop.”
• Karen Carlisle of Cicero Farm Market in Noblesville, IN was awarded $7,493 for the project, “Increasing Yields, Plant Vigor, and Soil Health with the use of Woodchips.”
• Timothy Carter of Honey Creek Farm in Russiaville, IN was awarded $3,300 for the project, “Pasture-Crop Tests without Chemical Termination.”
• Brevan DeWeese of Country Boy Farm & Garden in Russiaville, IN was awarded $6,499 for the project, “Creating a Micro Farm: Using Everything, Wasting Nothing, and Inspiring Young People to Do the Same.”
• Matthew Jose of Mad Farmers Collective in Indianapolis, IN was awarded $6,210 for the project, “Designing a Cost-Efficient Salad Greens Wash Area for Small-Scale Growers.”
• Linda Woodbury of Nature's Gift, LLC in Morgantown, IN was awarded $22,500 for the project, “The Hoosier Harvest 365 Hospital Delivery Program.”
• Melissa Boersema of Sklarczyk Seed Farm LLC in Johannesburg, MI was awarded $7,500 for the project, “A Proof of Concept Experiment Evaluating a Greensprouting Pre-Planting Treatment to Increase Seed Potato Yields and Develop Sustainable Practices within the Potato Industry.”
• Rachelle Bostwick of Earthkeeper Farm in Kent City, MI was awarded $7,486 for the project, “Assessing Profitably of Annual Grains Within a Diversified Organic Vegetable System for a Direct-to-Consumer Market.”
• Frank Corrado of Moss Funnel Farms in Bangor, MI was awarded $7,500 for the project, “Bees, Pleeze! - Adding an Educational Component to a Wildflower Field at a Midwest Blueberry Farm.”
• Jordan DeVries of Might Oak Orchards in Manistee, MI was awarded $22,050 for the project, “Practical Exclusion Netting for Reducing Disease Vectors in High Density Apple Systems.”
• Timothy J Malinich of Hearthstone Berry Farm in North Ridgeville, OH was awarded $7,494 for the project, “Figs as a Niche Crop in Northern Ohio.”
• Jerah Pettibone of Pettibone Urban Game in Columbus, OH was awarded $7,151 for the project, “Viability of Black Soldier Fly Larvae Production for Rabbit Waste Mitigation and as a Gamebird Protein Supplement.”
• Jeanne Saum of Saum's Mini-Farm and Apiary in Groveport, OH was awarded $14,986 for the project, “Economic Modification of Langstroth to AZ-Style Beehives to Enable Aging or Physically Limited Beekeepers to Begin/Continue Beekeeping and Improve Hive Care, Colony Health, and Production.”
• Rachel Tayse of Foraged & Sown in Columbus, OH was awarded $14,927 for the project, “Mad About Saffron: Growing a Valuable Global Seasoning in The Midwest.”
• David Volkman of Ohio Valley Hops in Maineville, OH was awarded $12,005 for the project, “Optimal Hop Harvest Timing.”
