Michigan, Indiana, Ohio milk numbers released

WASHINGTON – Dairy herds in Michigan produced 990 million pounds of milk during May, up slightly from a year ago, according to Marlo Johnson, Regional Director of USDA, NASS, Great Lakes Regional Office. 

The daily rate per cow was 75.2 pounds, unchanged from May 2018. 

The dairy herd was estimated at 425,000 head for May, up 2,000 head from a year earlier.

Dairy herds in Indiana produced 360 million pounds of milk during May, down 2.7 percent from a year ago, according to Greg Matli, State Statistician of the USDA, NASS, Indiana Field Office. 

The daily rate per cow was 64.8 pounds, unchanged from May 2018. The dairy herd was estimated at 179,000 head for May, down 5,000 head from a year earlier.

Dairy herds in Ohio produced 476 million pounds of milk during May, down 4.4 percent from a year ago, according to Cheryl Turner, State Statistician of the USDA, NASS, Ohio Field Office. 

The daily rate per cow was 61.5 pounds, up 0.2 pounds from May 2018. The dairy herd was estimated at 250,000 head for May, down 12,000 head from a year earlier.

Milk production in the 24 major States during May totaled 18.1 billion pounds, down 0.1 percent from May 2018. 

April revised production, at 17.6 billion pounds, was up 0.5 percent from April 2018. 

The April revision represented an increase of 195 million pounds or 1.1 percent from last month's preliminary 23-State production estimate. 

Production per cow in the 24 major States averaged 2,062 pounds for May, 11 pounds above May 2018. 

The number of milk cows on farms in the 24 major States was 8.79 million head, 55,000 head less than May 2018, but 5,000 head more than April 2019.
